And even then it doesn't always come off. I've tried to back in the water three times recently and been denied each time. This time I have the sniffles.

Whilst admiring the cat love above...
WAMT was having to spend 2 hours of a lovely Saturday taking a mortally injured pigeon to the emergency vets and clearing my garden of the carrier bag-worth of feathers that had been strewn across the garden by my neighbours psychotic feline. Safe to say I know which cat it was as it was waiting about 4ft away for the the poor bird to move again so it could attack some more when I found it.

Put a bloody bell on it, give the birds a sporting chance.

Good old UK weather let us go diving. Unsure about conditions we went offshore expecting the better viz. We got the viz and there was lots of light at 55m. This was helpful for the guy who'd not charged his torch.

What we had not anticipated was the slow waves rolling down the channel, probably from far away. As we approached the Shambles Bank (shallow rocky ledges south of Portland over which the water must rise) we saw huge standing waves of white, and steered a course around the Shambles.

We had assumed our dive would take us below the wave base. We were wrong and, at 55m when not sheltered by the wreck, the movement was 3-4m one way and then back. There was fishing line and net on the wreck and pointy bits too so, after each grabbing something to take home (2kg crab in our fridge), we all cut short the dive to surface just over an hour after descending.

What was it like getting back on the boat? That's some swell to reach right down to the bottom, more like deep ocean swells in Biscay

Not so bad as wavelength was long so diver and boat were lifted together. I suspect those waves came from far away. I find this Chesil Buoy a useful observation of actual conditions. It seems the wave periods was 12 seconds.

I've sailed across Biscay and was staggered at the size of the swell. At least 10 metres high, but with an enormous wavelength, so quite calm. One moment you'll be in a trough and only seeing hills of sea all around you, the next you'd be at the crest so at the top of the hill and seeing miles.

Better they cancel early when you've a chance of getting your accommodation cancelled than not.

It looks like tomorrow is going ahead, although it might be a rough ride out and Sunday is likely to be off.

I'm going to head up anyway and see what happens. Still not sure who we're diving with, but if you see someone squeezed into a grey O3 suit with twin euro 12s, say hi. It might be me.
