Hi Sam, I'm sorry I've not been there before but I'm sure one of us has! Give it a few days.

When I dived in Spain this summer they never asked about a medical. Nor last year or the year before for that matter.

When I did my Open Water course in 2012 I had to have a medical in Spain. Only £30 which is a hell of a lot cheaper than the >£100 I've seen in the UK. Maybe it's more thorough... or maybe it's just more expensive in the UK

The cynic in me says it's like yet another speciality course to make money.

I'm not disputing the 'law' just saying that from my experience this summer with three different dive centres, medicals were never mentioned.

The only thing they want is a dive certification card and an insurance card. They have to take these on the boat whilst you're diving as the Polica Local do spot checks -- they patrol on jet skis

My doctor signed off the medical fit for diving form gratis, I was surprised.

FACT - The National law says you need a medical in all Spain (Including Balearics & Canaries)..

Whether the autonomous region you are diving in chooses to endorse that law is an entirely
different matter. The default is the same as it's always been, don't listen to internet BS and
contact the dive centre you are diving with and ask them in writing if it's needed.

What's the price of getting a medical certificate in the UK? Not talking about the HSE medical; just a plain old you were alive when you had it medical.

AIUI there's few 'dive docs' in the UK, compared with a massive market like Spain, so under supply & demand, the UK ones will be more expensive.

One of the reasons I didn't dive in Fuertevenura last year was the absolute need for a medical, effectively doubling the cost of a day's diving.

So , having done your thorough research (l presume you did some), you spent all that money getting there and didn't dive due to the 'high cost of getting approved'! Is this for real? When did a bit of money become a show stopper in a mad pursuit like diving?

When the cost for two guided single cylinder blue water bimbles exceeds the cost of a weekend in Plymouth.

Oddly enough Dom, I have just gone through the same calculations for next week's holiday in the warm.
Two dives using my own RB would come to USD370. That's at least six attempts to leave the harbour at Eastbourne.
Even two 2-tank OC jaunts will be USD240! That's a lot of rum and prosecco.

I wasn't asked for more than the usual PADI self-declaration in Lanzarote in the last couple of years.
