Yeah right... just wait until he finds out they charge £12+ / kilo for lime in parts of the world. We'll get a few threads out of that one

(I've a pact with the wife to not get one until the boat's sold. Some things are worth waiting for)

& if the boat doesn’t sell, then no CCR.

Whereas you could buy a more economical second hand one right now.

Nick what's the deal with eating out up there currently? I think last year The Royal stopped doing food so that restricted the options quite a bit to The Ferry, the Chinese and the chip van that visits once a week.

Are there any local secrets I'm missing out on?

Royal is back open. There’s also the Stromness Hotel and the Hamnavoe Restaurant

Two curry houses in Kirkwall, one of which lets you take your own booze with no corkage charge

Centenary week. 15th to 22nd of June. I'm on a boat full of Gooers so I'm hoping they'll be a bit flexible with gasses to keep my costs down. Half the boat will be on breathers though so i'll expect they'll want standard gasses as their costs will be minimal.

Thanks Nick. I've never actually been to the Stromness Hotel and just found the Hamnavoe restaurant on Google maps. We will have a car available so might make the trip over to K-town.

Does anyone have a filled out dangerous goods form for the ferry? I have a 2x12 twinset with 32% and a 7 litre stage with 50%. No idea what to put down for weights and UN numbers (whatever they may be).

I think Emily (huskyan) used to have an example copy on their website. Have a search. I’ve got to do one in the next week or so, from memory you either carry oxygen or air. There aren’t codes for other mixes. Don’t try to complicate it with nitrox or trimix. Also you need to email the forms through something like 24 hrs min in advance.

Edit, might be duff advice as I can’t find it.

Thanks, I’ve searched but can’t find it. Huskyan do refer to it in their guide but it doesn’t seem to be available anymore.

I have one on my laptop at home. I’ll try to dig it out later.

FWIW, I only ever did it once to see what would happen. You just go in the campervan queue. Haven’t bothered since.

I never bothered either. I just packed the car with all cylinders underneath and out of sight.

True. That does not mean we didn't carry a lot of gas! :D

The last time I drove to Scapa my car we had all the gas (apart from suit gas) for two CCR divers for two weeks. The total inventory was a heap of 3ls cylinders (about 10), 2xAL40 (nitrox), 2x7l (nitrox), 2x7l (trimix), twin 12s of trimix, 12l of oxygen, a few suit bottles and a 5l of air (in test). We skipped a lot of forms and the ferry passage was event free.

It's hearing the tales of divers being forced to empty their cylinders which makes the small hassle worth doing.
