Got a mail from a club that use the underwater film studio in Basildon advertising a holiday in Malta. My wife has always wanted to go there, so decided that 10 boat dives in September, basic hotel, b&b and flights for £650 was just the ticket. She is around £200 cheaper as a non-diver.
We will dive with Paradise who are on a beach on the North coast. Tripadvisor gives them decent ratings, particularly if you are a competent diver rather than a beginner.
I think that it will be a culture shock from our normal five-star Madeiran hotel but, hey, it's only a week. I'll not make any Essex jokes.:whistling:

Cured - doctor suggests starting shallow! I'm dropping into a pool tomorrow in my dry suit with summer undergarments and doing a proper weight check - with a full tank unfortunately, but will add a couple of kg to compensate for air usage to get a fresh water figure. How much to add to that for salt water?

Great news. Do you know what it was -- I thought that torn eardrums took quite a while to heal,

Typically I add two to three kilos for salt water if nothing else changes.

I could also point out the weight of the gas in your tank - 3.3kg for air or nitrox. Tradition has it that you all do some Wibble bashing now....
So you could do a weight check for a full tank, then add the weight you'll loose when you breathe the gas.

    Thanks, Wibbs

Think that it must have been more a pinprick than a proper tear, thank goodness. I'll round my "couple" of kg to add for air use to 3.3.

It's been a good week for impulse holidays, we've just booked another one.:whistling: Sandals were having a summer sale at very good prices and we are off to Grenada for 10 days next May - one feature is free scuba!

Did the weight check in the pool today - with a full tank, I was at eye level with a normal breath at 5kg (interestingly, it was 4kg until I put my gloves and hood in my suit pocket). So I should be carrying 8kg allowing for gas use, compared to the 10 that I was using at Stoney. I kitted up on my own and remembered to connect the suit inflator and check that the exhaust valve was fully open - getting better each time!

Funny too, how many people seem to be OK on 8KG/10KG in fresh/salt water.

I guess it's about right for average height/weight people... which reminds me that I have a leaky weight pouch to sort out before all the shot vanishes!

PS One big shock after Madeira that you weren't expecting will be the lack of fish! There aren't a lot in Malta!

Already seen that in Barbados - the locals don't take much notice of the reserved areas and one of the jobs on dives for the leader was to open up the fish traps that she found. But you are right, Madeira is fantastic - I remember looking a a load of colourful small fish and the guide pointed up, where a large shoal of barracuda were looking down at lunch.:p

Hi did you stay at the Paradise Bay hotel as well? We looked at the hotel but ruled it out due to proximity to the ferry terminal and instead stayed at the Pergola.
Looking at making Malta a regular destination and maybe two trips or more some years, though some may be solo so budget and proximity to dive centre will be a plus as on those trips it will just be about the diving.

No, we stayed in a 3-star in Ximxema, but we did have a wander around the Paradise hotel. It looked ok as a base to go diving over the road. The menus looked typical for all-inclusive hotels, nothing inspired but perfectly edible. You probably prefer a room facing away from the road. The proximity to the ferry is not a problem in my view - it means that the buses are frequent, including airport lines that are quicker with less stops.

Was that the Porto Azzurro hotel xemxija ? As again that was one we considered. Looked at quite a few hotels in different areas but the Pergola, Maritim and the Porto where our final 3 choices on Malta.

Expensive but I also highly recommend the Tarragon restaurant about our only highlight to Bugibba, budget pretty much 100 euros upwards for a three course meal for two.
L'escargot in Melleiha was good value and I said mikes bar before ( must be a senoir moment lol ) it is Billy's music bar.

All this talk makes me want to be back there already.

Yes - Porto Azzurro. Public areas a bit tatty but pool OK, room basic but a good size, clean with new towels every day and working plumbing and a/c.

Highly recommended restaurant in Melleiha is Bouquet Garni, fantastic fish and the meat looked great too, similar price to the Tarragon.

I'm somewhat biased as probably half my diving has been there. Clear waters and much more fish than the Med; never that warm. Shore dives are limited, boat dives more often. I can give you views on four dive centres if you pm me.
Funchal would occupy your wife for a few days but lots to do further afield that would need a car hire. We use a local firm, Insularcar, very reasonable, don't try to sell you upgrades and treated me well when I pranged their car. Driving is easy on the main roads, avoid tiny village roads.

ok thanks, i thought the same as the med, but to be honest, you need to go to the medes islands spain.
i went there in october, all though it was basically shut up for the holiday season, the diving
was fantastic, was looking for a dive centre with a dive/accomadation package, and best time to go.
water temp is not a problem.

I'm going there in Feb. Probably will only do a day's diving, so I'd be interested in what you'd recommend to get the best out of it.

Dived quite a lot in Madeira; my favourite dive centre is Azul, which is at the South-East corner of the island. Small, friendly and their rib either takes you under soaring cliffs or to the Garajou park. Assuming that you are staying in Funchal, you need a car to get there.
In Funchal, there isn't much to choose between Madeira Divepoint (Pestana Carlton) or Scuba Madeira (Pestana Carlton) - run by two German brothers, good kit, serious view on safety. From both, you have to kit up and swim out to their boat, from Scuba Madeira, the exit can be hard work as it's a fair climb up a ladder at low tide and also, you are the first to take the boat and the last to leave it. I wasn't impressed by Explora Madeira - young, inexperienced guides, kit was a bit down at heel.
