Uncorrected image so colour may be a problem.

It looks like a Damsel fish, but if it is we can't find it in our bookshelf.

Looks like a kind of surgeon fish to me, hard to tell. What colour is it (really)?

    Yes
We wish we knew Divewench. They were caught in the background of a much bigger photo, and during the dive just dismissed as just another Damsel fish.
Then the question was raised as to which Damsel fish. Then if they were Damsel fish at all.
Surgeon fish is a possibility, but none of our books on Red Sea fish have a Surgeon fish like that.

This is not a trick question, we've several fish we are struggling to identify.

One that gave us grief while we were over there was a juvenile Bicolour Parrot fish, but a very tiny blurred watercolour reproduction from the margin of one of the fish books set us on the right tack. As soon as you search the net with the right key words, dozens of pictures of the same fish turn up, but in this case so far we lack that vital hint.

Boss says four to five inches, about the size of Red Sea Damsel fish

We've got Debelius - Red Sea Reef Guide
Lieske & Myers - Coral Reef Guide
A&A Ferrari - A Divers Guide to Reef Life

Not found it in there so far.

That was my thought too. It's the distinctive tail shape.
