hi all my family have just brought me a go pro hero 4 black.for my birthday.
what add ons will I need as don't know much about under water photography.
I have a anchor 1200 lumen dive light.that I was told is good for under water photo use.
also the standard housing it came with dosnt look right if I want to put filters on.
I could be wrong so need some expert advice.
    thank you sam.

Nice camera and a good set of questions.

As is you'll be able to dive with it down to 40 metres. The challenge is its dark and there's no red in the light as the water filters it out - that's why water looks blue. So you normally need a red filter to add it back. These clip on to the lens surround. Bide your time and look for a cheap one as the GoPro ones are a rip-off.

You might want a floating handle so it ends up on the water not on the bottom if you drop it. A selfie stick could be fun.

Lights can be very expensive costing literally thousands!

Play with it in the water. They're fun but can take a while to get the hang of.

Plug in your GoPro into the laptop and it becomes a disc drive. Then copy it over.

Or.. pull the SD Card out of the GoPro and shove it into a card reader that's connected to the laptop

Or.. use WiFi on the GoPro to create a network which you can connect to the laptop (gets a bit techie)

Sure there's other ways. Generally plugging the GoPro into the laptop's a lot easier.

what do you guys use, want something solid and capable. how much do I need to spend with out going over the top.
as I could do with a new drysuit.

Mac too. Expensive up front but much cheaper in the long run as they last longer, run faster, have far fewer security issues. But most of all tend to 'just work'. I'm running a 4+ year old MacBook Pro which still out-performs virtually all Windos laptops. I reckon I'd still get over a grand for it when I sell it - as I did with its predecessor.

What sort of price is it up for? Had a look at one of the reviews, it criticises the screen as being weak (they save money by using cheap display tech).

Never used a Mac but people swear by them and they seem to last much longer than other computers - my daughter has just replaced hers after nearly ten years. So, the higher cost gets spread over a long time.

    Good choice:)
You'll find that there's a few things that will need a bit of practice and may be strange at first, but after a short while it'll become quite natural. The main thing is it's a much calmer environment with subtle user interface ques compared with the football crowd noisy environment of Windows.

It does help to have someone show you around at first. So ask a Mac user to give you a few minutes.

I'm sure you won't regret it. I changed over to a Mac ten years ago and would never go back to Windows - I'd sooner run Linux than that windows 10 mass of spyware.

Cheap is good for filters. If it's just a plain piece of plastic, it's only worth a couple of quid. GoPro charge some loonatic amount for their filters. I had a plastic filter for one holiday. Lasted more or less the two weeks and finally dropped off (the loop for the string broke first).

I then moved to the much better made metal surround version which definitely doesn't break. Unfortunately I flooded the camera, so they'll last a lot longer. I will get another GoPro, but other dive kit is more important.
