I have done a quick Google and there appear to be some websites where I can text FOC - anyone used these and are they actually free and if so what is the catch?

If anyone can recommend a site which doesn't have hidden charges and won't result in them being drowned in spam messages it would be much appreciated. The phone I am wanting to message is a UK mobile but currently in Tunisia.

If you are on O2, you can do it from their website. Might be worth checking whoever your provider is. I believe the web-texts don't normally have your own number attached to them.

Why can't you text from a normal phone?

I haven't used a fee sms site for years, but even then they were spam-tastic.

I'm PaYG with Vodaphone, can text from my phone but it's painfully slow trying to type anything out when you only have a basic phone keypad......

Not leaving my number is not a problem. Can email but they have very limited access to a PC and a proper phonecall is ridiculously expensive :(

They may be charged for receiving as well. That was the deal that the provider was offering in Egypt I think.

You can get a bluetooth dongle for a PC and use the PC to create the message, and send it via the bluetooth link to the phone, as though you had typed it at the phone keyboard.

Without knowing what PC you use it's hard to be more specific. Dongles were a few quid when I bought mine, and of course this assumes your phone is bluetooth capable.

Good idea  Phone is bluetooth but we may have a lead to connect it to the PC somewhere, I will look tomorrow. Nokia suite is already on desktop as he uses it with his current phone.

If we don't have a lead for mine I know he used to connect his old to the PC and again the software is already on the machine - finding the phone/charger/lead may however be rather a challenge!

I know it's free for him to receive texts, so just the cost of sending from my end to worry about.

Just looked and I think the laptop has bluetooth built in - I may take it to work tomorrow and ask one of the lads if they can get the two to talk to each other ( I may be crap with technology, but remember it's not what you know but who you know ;)) .
