Pony Reg
Those of you who use Pony Bottle rigs ... do you have same standard of reg as your main reg, same as Octo ... or something cheaper as your pony bottle set up.
I have Apex STX200 as main ... and about to buy a Pony Reg. Obviously do not need full range of ports on 1st stage, so will be looking for something with 1hp and 1 mp port only ... and will fit with a button gauge. Only 4.9% of the UK population live in Wales - the rest just wish they did. |

RE: Pony Reg
Depends how you mount it.
A good set if you can't reach the valve A cheap set if you can. if in the event your pony regs free flow if its side slung and you can reach the valve easily then a cheap on will do. If not a more expensive high end on is the answer. but saying that a high end on if it free flows will dump more gas quicker. The choice is yours. RE: Pony Reg
Personally I would say go for a good quality reg, but not necessarily top spec. Personally I would say an Apex DS4 and XTX40 would be ideal.

RE: Pony Reg
Is the free flow when you drop the reg in the water and it opens the valve?

RE: Pony Reg
Yes, that type of thing, or when the reg gets too cold and freezes open.
Apeks DS4 & Egress for me, mounted inverted so I can reach the valve easily. Ellie Ellie's Boat Diving Etiquette: Do Dive 1, Get Sea Sick, Throw Up, Eat Doughnut, Do Dive 2. Sorted! |

RE: Pony Reg
So with these pony set-ups, you don't open the valve before you enter the water?

Open the valve to pressurise the 2nd stage to stop water ingress, then close it until needed. No chance of free flow gas loss then. But if you can't reach the valve then that would be a bit silly ![]() Ellie Ellie's Boat Diving Etiquette: Do Dive 1, Get Sea Sick, Throw Up, Eat Doughnut, Do Dive 2. Sorted! |

DS4 is my current choice (only marginally more expensive than DS1) .. looking at Apeks kit they have a 'cheaper' octo ... the "Egress" anybody any views on this ? I should have read further down the thread. ![]() The Egress seems a nice solution, would certainly be able to lie neatly along tank. You happy with the Egress ? they are a good 25% cheaper than an XTX40 ... which adds to the good reasons to buy (if no issues with it) Only 4.9% of the UK population live in Wales - the rest just wish they did. |

RE: Pony Reg
I chose the Egress, because its flat(ish) and neat, has had great reviews and works both ways up.

Certainly not as nice a breathe at 30m as my XTX200's and having the bubbles coming out of the side feels odd but it does the job perfectly well. I have carried my Egress (backmounted pony so always turned on) on numerous winter UK quarry dives and NEVER had a freeflow or problems with it purging when I first jump in. |
