All the more reason to invest in an alarm for the lower pressure hose, they surfaced only 200 meters from the boat, can't help thinking it could have saved a lot of problems

The story doesn't go into much detail but it seems rather odd that surfacing 200 metres away means you get left behind!

Anyone diving off a boat without a SMB is asking for trouble.......it's a must on the dive boats i use locally......'no SMB no dive'

Heard about this on the telly yesterday - apparently as soon as the were resucued they sold the story of "shark infested waters" etc.

An SMB and whistle would have saved a costly resuce!!

The dive op is claiming that they choose to ignore basic safety guidelines. If it was my op I wouldn't have let them dive without a SMB and/or whistle.

As far as I recall, it's mandatory that all divers carry an SMB in Queensland. I'd be interested to know the full details, especially as the Queensland Government are expecting the cost of the search to be paid out of the proceeds from selling the story....

If they're going to make the money from the story that the news reports say they are, then I think its only right that they pay for the rescue, after all ,without the rescue mission they wouldn't be around to even tell their story

I agree with most of the comments posted here but in reality an SMB
will be next to 'kin useless once you're on the surface.
Whistle/reflector/air horn etc.. would be far more useful than a flacid
bit of yellow orange oversized johnnie.

2m of bright orange on a blue background could be handy but yes an airhorn/whistle would have worked nicely.

If you read the reports the rescue party seemed to suggest that the 2 numptys seemed oddly well prepared for thier stay (neither suffering dehydration???) or maybe its just me being a cynical (and suspicious) bastard
