We had problems with to forum I used to moderate, and we decided to remove the post count system completley.
Overnight, there were 3 resignations, and far less noobies who disagreed with our choice.

The following week, the forum feeling completly changed, the posts were generally of a higher standard, the jokes got better, and there were less pointless replies even from senior members

But it does give you a feeling of who has been giving their time to the forum when you can see their post count, so its a very mixed argument. IMO providing the forum is behaved such as here, the post count can only be a good thing.
